The Hidden Price of Standing Still

Here's something I've been thinking about lately:

We're pretty good at calculating what it costs us to move forward. Before making a decision, most of us instinctively ask: What's the downside? What could go wrong? What will this cost me in time, money, or energy?

This caution makes sense. It's helped humans survive for millennia.

But there's a blind spot in this thinking—one that quietly shapes our lives more than we realize.

We almost never calculate the cost of staying put.

When we choose not to act, it rarely feels like a choice at all. It feels like... nothing. Like we're maintaining the status quo, holding steady, keeping things safe.

But inaction has a price tag too. It's just harder to see because it accrues slowly:

• The career opportunity that expires while you deliberate
• The relationship that fades from neglect
• The skill you never develop
• The conversation you never have
• The health issue that compounds over time

The status quo isn't actually static—it's often quietly declining. Markets shift. People move on. Muscles atrophy. Opportunities close.

So here's the reframe: What if we evaluated our non-decisions with the same rigor we apply to our decisions?

Next time you're weighing whether to take action on something, try this: Make a list of the costs and risks of moving forward. Then make an equally honest list of the costs and risks of doing nothing for the next 6 months, year, or five years.
